Having an Excellent Spirit

1Kings 8:61 Let your heart therefore be perfect with the LORD our God, to walk in his statutes, and to keep his commandments, as at this day.

We must strive to have an excellent spirit before God.   The LORD told Abraham:  walk before me and be perfect.  He would later tell us in the New Testament, be ye perfect as I am perfect.  Looking at the LORD as our example of excellence and perfection, we find that He made himself of no reputation, He was driven by the will of His Father and desired the good of others. He was not driven by gain.  Sin did not reign in his body.

Matthew 19:21 Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.

All that we truly have to return to the LORD is our self, which is our heart, or mind and our service.  Every-thing else including that, are the assets that the LORD has given to us.  The LORD is very concerned with the person that we are on the inside. This is the person that only He truly sees, our relationship with Him and our fellow man in this world.  It is not an incident of great rejoicing, our spiritual prowess, for the gifts of the Spirit are given by the spirit of God Himself.

He is concerned with what we return to him, of what nature that is.  If our hearts are conformed to this world or to His spirit that is imperative to Him and to us.  Is our mind being renewed? King David said;
give me a clean heart and a right spirit.  And that the Word of God would light his path.  We know that the path of life is in God's word and in his hands.

Luke 10:27  And he answering said, Thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbor as thyself.

As a beginning, loving the LORD first, and with all of our hearts, mind, soul and strength, is the beginning of having an excellent spirit. This is the first commandment.   Jesus said that if a person would love Him, they will keep his commandments.  A perfect heart is concerned with what gives pleasure to the one that he loves.  Love causes a great surrender.  If the love is for the LORD, it will bring about the workings toward an excellent spirit, because we love Him first.
